The Animal Rescue Site is having trouble getting enough people to click on it daily so they can meet their quota of getting FREE FOOD donated every day to abused and neglected animals in their shelters.

It takes less than a minute (only about 15 seconds actually) to go to their site and click on the purple box titled, ‘Click Here to Give - it’s FREE!’. Every click gives about .6 bowls of food to sheltered dogs. You can also click daily!

Keep in mind that this does not cost you a thing. Their corporate sponsors/advertisers use the number of daily visits to donate food to abandoned/neglected animals in exchange for advertising. [via.]

With the continuing campaigns for Internet-censoring litigation such as SOPA and PIPA, and the closure of sites such as Megaupload under allegations of ‘piracy’ and ‘conspiracy’ the time has come to take a stand against music, film and media companies’ lobbyists.

The only way is to hit them where it truly hurts.
Their profit margins.

March 2012 is the end of the 1st quarter in economic reports worldwide.

Do not buy a single record. Do not download a single song, legally or illegally. Do not go to see a single film in cinemas, or download a copy, Do not buy a DVD in the stores. Do not buy a videogame. Do not buy a single book or magazine.

Wait the 4 weeks to buy them in April: see the film later, etc. Holding out for just 4 weeks, maximum, will leave a gaping hole in media and entertainment companies’ profits for the 1st quarter, an economic hit which will in turn be observed by governments worldwide as stocks and shares will blip from a large enough loss of incomes.
This action can give a statement of intent:

 ”We will not tolerate the Media Industries’ lobbying for legistation which will censor the internet.”

I like this idea a lot, but I might recommend having some discretion with one’s blackout. There are some really intelligent companies, like Valve, who are wholeheartedly against SOPA and PIPA and have already intelligently articulated their viewpoint on the whole piracy issue. I live near Lawrence, which is a place bursting with local craftspeople and very small businesses— aka the type of people who have no pull with federal government and oftentimes can’t afford to lose a month of business. Do not needlessly punish companies which do not deserve your vitriol.

tl;dr: As a consumer, your biggest strength is your buying power. If you don’t like what a company is doing, stop forking over your cash, even if you like their product.

Agreed. I’m going to do this but I’m going to continue giving money to small businesses/independent workers/etc.

I guess at this point I should mention a little bit about my identity, if I can work up the nerve… I honestly don’t get it. I set this up to post about the things I’m scared to say to people I know, but the first thing I do is ask my friends who else has one. I say I hate labels, but I’m proud of the ones I have. And it’s slightly disturbing how hard I try to avoid being a stereotype…

Anyway, I guess I need to start with the basics if I’m going to get anywhere. My name is Katelyn. Please don’t call me Katie (but Kate is fine). I live in Lima, OH, and fittingly enough, I’m a complete Gleek. Musical theater used to be one of my big things, and it still would be if I didn’t hate/mistrust the entire drama club (along with most of the rest of my school) to some degree. My main passion is science, especially genetics, and I’ve found a niche in the school’s trivia team. Art and music are secondary activities- I sing a little, I draw a little, I’ve tried to teach myself piano and failed miserably. I’m working towards becoming a polyglot (a person who can speak lots of languages), but thus far I only know Spanish, Esperanto, and a little Japanese.

I sound too…shy. I don’t like it- it’s too roundabout. I’ll just put all my labels, all the stereotypes I fall under right here and let you draw your own conclusions.

I’m a nerd, a social outcast, and a freak. I’m quiet, too quiet. I’m a Ravenclaw, or so I’d like to think. I’m a Wiccan, and pretty darn proud of it. I like girls. I don’t want to say if I’m a lesbian of bisexual- I don’t know where exactly I fall. I’m the girl who can’t sing but does, and who tries too hard to be someone’s friends. I don’t cry at the movies because I cry in real life situations, and I hate myself for it. I react to triggers more strongly than I’d like to admit. I can- but try not to- manipulate people. And when you talk to me, you’ll learn more about yourself than you do about me.

Eh, it’s a start.

Depends how bad. Usually, I just put on some music and lose myself in the lyrics. Otherwise, I’ll go down into the basement and draw or paint until I forget what I’m mad about. Music and art are my life (yeah, me and every other teenager), and they’re a refuge when life turns sour for a bit.
